kk + tm cover The New Pornographers, Teenage Fanclub, The Soft Boys, The Zombies, Guided by Voices, The Who, et. al. . . .

Here are our faves from the second fabulous cover collection by Futureman Records' Keith Klingensmith and the TM Collective. They're all available for free download on a name-your-price basis. We know you know the artists they're covering, but we're sticking bandnames in there anyway. And don't worry: you'll find a shipload of great ones still awaiting your tender touch at the Bandcamp site.

Elvis Depressedly Disdisgraced

As we've said many times (but don't really care to redocument) we tend to favor uptempo, often upbeat songage. We already spend enough time in the basement as it is and therefore bask in the odd shaft that pierces the gloom. But here we are, making an exception.

The kindly Nathan over at Austin Town Hall alerted us to a new one by the Carolina troika postitled above. That set us off on a leisurely journey through their name-your-price, pokey-paced repertoire, a large amount of which was not-too-this and not-too-that and mostly just right. (We especially love the voice, but kudos to the overall atmospherics as well.) The below are some of this Elvis' more uptempo numbers, so, like, strap your hands 'cross our engines.

Some future

future before & after (or vice versa)

Before? Sure. After? Hmmm. Oh, well, further poking turned up this excellent charger by Parisian band future. Clicking your heels might turn up more music and info; clicking the bandname and things in the widget definitely will.

Do Night Flowers Sleep Alone in Single Beds?

Funny, isn't it, what one might unearth while poking around one's Shoegaze mix at one's Songdrop page? (Hilarious, pp, just hilarious.) Well, that snide remark notwithstanding, we were grooving gazily to this song by London band Night Flowers and wondered if it might be available for free download. Well, guess what. First we dl'ed the version at Soundcloud, all 109.1 MB, which was a lot of megs but well worth it. Then we found the version below at only 6.05. TMI? Not enough? Does any of this matter? Yes, yes, & yes, but we'll go ahead and stfu and leave you alone with two wonderful songs.

Brisbands: The Good Sports & Johnny and The Fembots

Sport in the middle (Jake?) looks a lot like Johnny.

Many thanks to Ozblog Who The Hell for the headsup on these two excellent Brisbane outfits. We love the retro timelessness of the songs and are groovified to find young artists who feel and project its allure.

You can download "Disappearing Lover" plus two more songs at The Good Sportstriple j Unearthed page.

Worried 'bots wonder, "Where the hell's Johnny?" Oh, phweww'''''''.

And you can download another by JaTF at their triple j Unearthed page.

Mad About the Mack (& Expwy, Dream Boys, Chloë Sunshine, Shadows At Play, & Yuck, amongst others)

Back in June we happened upon The Mad Mackerel, an excellent music site blogcasting out of Charlbury, Oxon. We quickly got on the mailing list and suggest you do the same.

We don't know if TMM is "mad" as in pissed-off pisciperson or insane ichthyoid or wtf, but we do know this is one busy blogger (as in spawning an average of 2.5 posts per day during the past two months). We are excited to be able to alert you to some of the songs the Mackerel alerted us to in a Best of the Month: July 2013 post and highly recommend you visit the post and troll through the other 31 numbers. Many thanks to TMM for schooling us in such great tuneage.

Company or CO. or The Company - Moonlight

Definitively answering (in the affirmative, duh) the question, "Can any good thing come out of Charleston/SC?" We found this earlier in the year, so maybe it's not that recent ("recent" being kind of relative and all, wot?). We love it, though, and maybe you will, too. More info and free, downloadable tuneage can be found here. Company (or "CO." to those of us in the know (for the past 25 mins. or so)) released an EP, Bird Skulls (as The Company), on Hiroshima Day this week. The picture up there might not capture their essence, but we kind of like it (plus, it's got that cognoscenti-ish abbreviation previously referenced).
